Frequently Asked Questions
What happens on my first day at The Shores?
If admission is recommended after your assessment, you will be escorted to your room and welcomed to the unit. Your care team will review your treatment plan with you and answer any questions, so you feel informed and supported from the start.
What can I bring with me?
Our team will provide a recommended packing list before admission to help you prepare. In general, you should plan to bring:
- Clothing without drawstrings (including leggings)
- Appropriate reading materials
- School or writing notebooks (no spiral binding)
- A non-electric toothbrush
- Toiletries in the original packaging (soap, solid/stick deodorant, toothpaste, lotion, shampoo, and feminine products)
Note: Toiletries must be alcohol-free and not in glass or aluminum containers. Personal toiletries may need to be stored at the nurse’s station and labeled with your name.
What can’t I bring with me?
For safety reasons, certain items are not permitted, including (but not limited to):
- Weapons
- Sharp objects
- Clothing with strings
- Drugs or drug paraphernalia
For a complete list of restricted items, download the prohibited and allowed items list [PDF].
When can I use my phone?
We understand how important it is to stay connected. Phone access is personalized based on each patient’s needs and treatment plan. In most cases, time is set aside each day for important calls and personal matters. Your care team will review the details with you upon arrival.
Note: Phones are not allowed on the child and adolescent unit. Scheduled supervised video calls with families are available using devices at The Shores.
When can I see my family or loved ones?
Staying connected with family and loved ones is an important part of healing. Visiting hours are structured to support meaningful connection while maintaining your treatment schedule.

How long will my stay be?
Each person’s journey is unique. The length of your stay will depend on your goals, needs, and personalized treatment plan. Your care team will discuss what to expect and keep you informed and involved every step of the way.
What happens when I finish inpatient treatment?
As you prepare to leave inpatient care, our team will help connect you with outpatient services at The Shores or work with your local care team to create a safe and supportive transition to the next phase of your care.
